What is an “Intension Foundation?”
The InTension foundation system is a new concrete structural design that unites two structural concepts, the conventional poured in place concrete basement foundation and the post tension slab on grade foundation. This design has been developed to combat the negative effects of Colorado’s expansive soils. The InTension foundation also provides a more efficient use of the entire foundation wall height over the current structural floor applications used in Colorado.
The InTension design is most efficiently used in moderately expansive soil conditions. This application of the InTension foundation system offers several advantages over current construction methods.
The InTension foundation system:
- Provides a preferred structural application by eliminating unanticipated expenses that may be encountered while drilling caissons in moderately expansive soil conditions.
- Reduces the risk of mildew in the structural floor crawl space.
- The risk of radon is reduced when used in conjunction with a sealed vapor barrier and perimeter drain.
- The cost savings can be between five and ten percent over a caisson foundation with a structural floor.
The InTension foundation is rapidly becoming the preferred method of choice in moderately expansive soil conditions. Post tension design and installation is a rapidly growing product in the Denver housing market as many builders and engineers recognize the capabilities of post tensioned concrete. The InTension foundation is expected to have a greater impact on the Denver housing market than past post tension designs.
